Kajiado Enforces Licensing For Childcare Facilities To Enhance Safety

It is now mandatory for all childcare facilities in Kajiado County to obtain a license following the approval of the Kajiado County Child Care Facility Bill 2024. This crucial legislation aims to ensure the safety and well-being of our children under four years old.
The bill was prompted by research from the African Population and Health Research Centre, which revealed negligence in childcare among workers in flower farms, leading to rising malnutrition rates among young children.
All childcare facilities must be licensed by the county’s childcare licensing committee. Operating without a license could result in fines up to Sh500,000 or a two-year imprisonment term.
Facilities are required to maintain up-to-date records, including immunisation, emergency contacts, and daily attendance.
Employers with more than 20 staff must set up or subcontract an integrated childcare facility. Those with over five employees must also provide a lactation room.
The county’s Department of Health will manage the facilities, ensuring compliance and safety standards are met.
