Cabinet Secretary for Agriculture and Livestock Development, Mithika Linturi, on Friday morning led a high-level forum on feed and fodder policy and the continental launch of the Resilient African Feed and Fodder Systems Project (RAFFS) in Kenya.
With the livestock subsector contributing 12% to Kenya’s GDP, it holds a pivotal role in the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda, where the Kenya Kwanza government is prioritizing investments in innovative, commercially oriented agriculture.
Key focus areas within the livestock industry include feed production, value addition, and mechanization, as well as the digitization and digitalization of the sector through initiatives like the Livestock Identification and Traceability System (LITS).
The CS noted, “Our commitment is resolute in addressing the 60% deficit in annual animal feed production.
This initiative stems from a proposal by the AU–Inter-African Bureau for Animal Resources (AU–IBAR), tasked with supporting and coordinating the enhanced utilization of animals (livestock, fisheries, and wildlife) as a vital resource for human wellbeing across AU member states.”
The CS was together with African Union Commissioner, Josefa Leonel Correia Sacko and esteemed colleagues, Hassan Husseine Mohammed of Somalia and Lt. Col (Rtd) Bright Rwamirama of Uganda.
