A family in makara Village, Moticho ward in South Mugirango is seeking justice after their kin collapsed and died at Etago police cells a day after he was arrested.
A 47 year old Shem Nyakundi was arrested on Tuesday evening by the area assistant chief and community policing personnel who took him to Etago police station where he was booked and taken into the police cells for trading illicit brew.
Nyakundi was taken from his home on a night vigil when he was mourning the death of his younger brother as they prepared for his burial arrangements.
“They took him with 20liters of chang’aa to the police station,the following day I visited him and gave him breakfast we chatted and i went back home,”Said his son.
David noted, his mother received a call from a police officer Who demanded five thousand for police cashbail for them to release him.
At lunch hour he brought a meal for his father and he adviced them to go and sell their cow and get him out of police cells.
“At this time we had a conversation, my father was full of life, he had no signs of sickness, he never told me he was unwell and he had no physical injuries,” said David.
As he went home to fetch money, at around 4:30 pm, he received the news of him father’s death from a boda boda rider who was on the road.
“He took me to the hospital where his body was kept and I confirmed it was my dad,” said David.
He says they never got information from the police station when his father got sick, when he was taken to the hospital and what led to all this till now.
South Mugirango Member of parliament Sylvanus Osoro condemned the death and demanded police officers from Etago police station to give answers in regards to the death of this suspect under their care
“The police who should be protecting the public are linked to this mysterious death in the police cells,” said Osoro.
He demanded for justice for this suspect saying petty offenders are arrested and locked under police.
He asked interior CS to transfer police officers from this police station as they launch investigations.
Efforts to reach out to the police officers for a comment remain unfruitful.
