In a decisive move to strengthen health systems and improve patient outcomes, Kisii County Governor Simba Arati has unveiled a suite of transformative measures that are reshaping healthcare delivery across the region.
The county government has made substantial investments in infrastructure, technology, medical equipment, and personnel in what Governor Arati describes as a “new era of patient-centered care.”
Speaking at Gusii stadium during Madaraka day celebration, the governor outlined the progress made in modernizing health facilities, with a focus on transparency, efficiency, and access to quality care.
“The health and well-being of our people remain a top priority. I extend my deepest appreciation to all health professionals and support staff who work tirelessly to serve our communities,” said Arati.
Hospital Digitization Reduces Losses, Increases Revenue
One of the flagship reforms has been the digitization of hospital systems across public facilities. According to Governor Arati, this initiative has played a pivotal role in eliminating pilferage, enhancing record-keeping, and increasing revenue collection.
The digital platform allows for real-time monitoring of services, stock levels, billing, and patient records streamlining operations and eliminating leakages that previously hampered service delivery.
“Digitization has enabled our hospitals to become self-sufficient,” the governor noted. “With increased revenues, we have been able to reinvest directly into patient care by procuring advanced medical equipment and improving infrastructure.”
Some of the medical devices recently acquired include high-grade safety cabinets for lab work, baby warmers for neonatal units, and modern anaesthetic machines that enhance surgical capacity and patient safety.
These investments, according to county health officials, have significantly improved the working conditions of specialists and the quality of care delivered to patients.
Mother and Child Hospital to Address Infant and Maternal Mortality
Another major project nearing completion is the state-of-the-art Mother and Child Hospital (MCH) wing at Kisii Teaching and Referral Hospital (KTRH).
Once operational, this facility will offer comprehensive maternal, newborn, and child healthcare under one roof. It will provide prenatal checkups, delivery services, postnatal care, pediatric consultations, and immunizations, creating a seamless continuum of care for women and children.
“This will be a game-changer in reducing maternal and infant mortality rates,” said Governor Arati. “No mother should lose her life while giving birth, and no child should die from preventable conditions.”
The MCH wing is expected to ease congestion in other departments, improve patient flow, and reduce referral delays for high-risk pregnancies. It also reflects the county’s alignment with national and global health goals, including the Sustainable Development Goal 3 on ensuring healthy lives and promoting well-being for all.

Renovated Postnatal Ward Offers Comfort and Dignity
Arati said that to support mothers post-delivery, the postnatal unit at KTRH has been fully renovated and expanded. The improved ward now features more beds, better ventilation, enhanced privacy, and upgraded sanitation facilities. Lactation support and nutritional counseling services are also offered as part of a holistic recovery experience for new mothers.
Health officials report that these improvements have led to a significant reduction in postpartum complications and have increased patient satisfaction scores.
Oncology Unit Brings Cancer Treatment Closer to Home
Recognizing the growing burden of non-communicable diseases, the county government has also established a fully equipped oncology unit at KTRH. Cancer patients can now access chemotherapy and other forms of treatment without traveling long distances to Nairobi or Eldoret.
This development has not only improved access to life-saving care but also reduced the financial strain on families who previously had to travel or relocate for extended treatment cycles. Plans are underway to expand the unit to include screening and radiology services.
Continuous Supply of Medicines and Medical Supplies
The county has prioritized the regular procurement and distribution of essential medicines and medical supplies to its health centers and dispensaries.
This proactive supply chain management ensures that patients, especially in rural areas, receive timely and uninterrupted care. Community health volunteers are also being trained to track medicine usage and report stock-outs, creating a responsive feedback loop.
Boosting Human Resources for Health
In response to persistent staffing shortages, the County Public Service Board has initiated a recruitment drive to onboard more healthcare workers across all cadres. From doctors and nurses to laboratory technologists and community health workers, the county is aiming to improve the patient-to-provider ratio in both urban and rural health facilities.
Moreover, the promotion of deserving staff is being prioritized to boost morale and ensure career progression within the health sector.
“We recognize the critical role health workers play, and we are committed to supporting them through fair promotions, adequate training, and decent working conditions,” Governor Arati emphasized.
Way forward
Kisii County’s ongoing healthcare reforms reflect a broader shift toward data-driven governance, patient-centered care, and resilience in public service delivery. As the county continues to invest in health, education, and digital innovation, residents can expect further improvements in access and outcomes.
Governor Arati concluded by reiterating his administration’s commitment to universal health coverage, adding, “We are building a health system that listens, responds, and heals. This is just the beginning.”
