The Kenya Union of Savings and Credit Co-operatives (KUSCCO) held a National SACCO Leaders Consultative meeting in Nairobi, bringing together key stakeholders to discuss pressing issues within the cooperative sector. The meeting focused on enhancing the operational efficiency of SACCOs across the country, strengthening regulatory compliance, and addressing challenges in access to credit.
The consultative session, attended by SACCO leaders from all counties, sought to review the sector’s performance, propose policy reforms, and explore strategies to support the continued growth of the cooperative movement in Kenya.
Speaking at the event, KUSCCO National Chairman David Mategwa, emphasized the importance of SACCOs in driving financial inclusion and economic empowerment, especially among underserved populations.
“Today’s gathering is crucial as we aim to foster a collaborative approach in addressing the challenges facing our SACCOs, including regulatory changes, digital transformation, and enhancing member services.” Mategwa noted.
The meeting also featured discussions on the impact of the recent legislative changes on SACCOs, with leaders expressing concerns over the proposed tax reforms and how they may affect SACCO profitability and member savings. Participants explored solutions to ensure SACCOs remain competitive in the evolving financial landscape while continuing to offer affordable credit to their members.
In addition, delegates discussed the role of technology in transforming SACCO operations, with an emphasis on digital platforms that could streamline member services and increase financial transparency.
The outcomes of the consultative meeting will be compiled into a report to be presented to the government, with hopes that the recommendations will influence policy direction to support SACCO growth and sustainability.
