Residents in Mombasa County were yesterday trying to come to terms with the sudden demise of former Prime Minister Raila Odinga.
At Bunge La Mwananchi in the coastal town, residents expressed deep sorrow and paid glowing tribute to the long-serving opposition leader and democracy icon.
Raphael Ondiek Wakaya from Ziwa la Ng’ombe in Nyali constituency extended his heartfelt condolences to the Odinga family, the Luo community, and Kenya as a nation.
He described Raila as “a freedom fighter and a true Kenyan patriot who brought democracy to Kenya as a nation.”
“Raila’s legacy is unmatched. He fought tirelessly for justice, multiparty democracy and the rights of the ordinary mwananchi. We have lost a giant,” Wakaya said.
“We have lost a leader of the nation, a democrat. His voice was a beacon of hope for many of us who believed in justice and equity,” Peter Otieno, a Mombasa resident, mourned the former Prime Minister.
Otieno further called on leaders within the Orange Democratic Movement (ODM) to remain united and strong in the wake of Odinga’s passing, urging them to carry on with the vision and mission of the party.
“We need unity more than ever. ODM must stand firm, regroup and continue to grow,” urged Otieno.
Joel Mwarage echoed the sentiments, describing Raila as a fearless freedom fighter who championed major reforms such as devolution and freedom of speech.
“Because of Raila Odinga, today we enjoy rights and governance systems that give voice to local communities. He fought for what was right, no matter the cost,” Mwarage stated.
