National Assembly’s Departmental Committee on Health has challenged the management of the Kenya Medical Supplies Authority (KEMSA) to fast-track reforms to ensure achievement of the universal health coverage.
Speaking during a working tour to KEMSA warehouses in Embakasi, the Committee Chairperson Robert Pukose (Endebbes) said, there is need to improve on delivery of drugs and other health products in an efficient and timely manner.
On his part Dr. James Nyikal from Seme constituency said, “It does appear to us, there is still a lot more you need to do. Because if we are going to achieve universal health coverage, the biggest issue is the provision of health products like drugs and equipments, and it is KEMSA, who is responsible for making that available to the Counties.”
The legislators praised the management for reducing the delivery timelines from 42 days to 16 days.
The Departmental Committee on Health lauded the management for closing down some 25 private warehouses subsequently saving taxpayers over Sh200 million while at the same time calling on the County Governments and public health facilities who owe KEMSA to pay their dues on time to facilitate its operations.
KEMSA Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Ms. Terry Ramadhani on her part noted that the institution is reeling in huge pending bills amounting to Sh5.7 billion.
The Departmental Committee on Health also praised the management for implementing key reforms at the institution following the multi-billion-shilling COVID-19 scandal in 2020.
The Committee members promised to work with their colleagues from Senate to support the management and ensure reforms at KEMSA are achieved and that Kenyans access the best quality healthcare.
The Pukose led Committee vowed to pass legislation that will enable KEMSA has an improved performance and good service delivery.
