The Kenya Marine and Fisheries Institute (KMFRI) is implementing a seawater greenhouse technology to revolutionise agriculture in arid and semi-arid areas of Kenya. The technology, known as the Seawater Greenhouse Technology and Lithium Mining from Saltworks Project, is being piloted at Kadzuhoni in Magarini Sub County, Kilifi County. The technology uses a greenhouse setup to evaporate saline water from the sea or aquifers, which then flows through a heat exchanger to warm the humid air. The humid air then condenses and is collected in a reservoir for watering crops and domestic purposes. The technology is part of a global project called SALT-MINE, which aims to develop a cost-effective technology for lithium extraction from salt brine, developed by scientists from Kenya, Norway, Tanzania, Somalia, and South Africa.
Kenya Connect Library Learning Centre in Wamunyu, Mwala, has sponsored a competition for over 108 students to improve their literacy levels by mastering the art of reading books. The competition required students to read 95 books in three months, leading to a celebration where winners were crowned as King and Queen of the reading challenge. Executive Director James Musyoka, co-founder of Kenya Connect, emphasised the importance of promoting a reading culture through library programmes and hosting Saturday story time. The centre also issued books, pens, pencils, and crayons for free to encourage students to explore their creativity. However, the internet has posed a challenge as it has many distractions, making reading physical books more challenging. Teachers at Kenya Connect have created a mobile library to encourage reading culture, and the King and Queen reading competition ensures students read the books. 14-year-old Eveline Mueke from Mbaikini Primary School was crowned as the Queen Reader, while 11-year-old Israel Mwendwa was crowned the King Reader, highlighting his favourite subject, English.
Nyandarua County has expressed interest in hosting national cross-country trials with Athletics Kenya (AK) to select the team for next year’s World Cross Country Championships. AK Chairman Francis Kamau Mwaniki stated that the county has all the facilities to host the event at Ol Kalou Arboretum. Mwaniki challenged runners in the area to train hard to increase their chances of being selected for the national team for the World Championship set for Serbia. The county’s time trial organiser, Coach Francis Kamau Esmi, noted that the fast times recorded at the time-trial event at Kwa-Nguku Ground showed runners had prepared well for the cross-country season.
Lawyers are advised to create networks and have mentors to succeed in the rapidly changing legal industry. The Law Society of Kenya President Eric Theuri and National Assembly Chief Whip Silvanus Osoro both emphasise the importance of networking for job opportunities and clients. Osoro called for a structured mentorship programme for law students in all universities offering law degrees. On the other hand, former Meru Governor Kiraitu Murungi called on lawyers to develop stress management mechanisms, as many lawyers are draining into stress due to hard economic times. MKU Vice-Chancellor Prof. Deogratius Jaganyi emphasised the university’s efforts to promote access to higher education and leverage technology to align the legal profession with the fast-changing environment.
Chief Justice Martha Koome swore in 69 Resident Magistrates, who will also serve as Small Claims Court Adjudicators. These courts are considered “people’s courts” and “the face of the justice system” as they hear and resolve the majority of cases, including criminal, traffic, and civil cases. The majority of people’s experience with the law is derived from their interactions with these courts.
