The Office of the Registrar of Political Parties (ORPP) has issued the 34th Certificate of Provisional Registration to Ufanisi Kenya Party (UPK), paving the way for the political outfit to begin operations as it works towards full registration ahead of the 2027 General Election.
The certificate was presented to the party’s founding members by Registrar of Political Parties J.C. Lorionokou during a ceremony at the ORPP headquarters in Nairobi after the party fulfilled the legal requirements for provisional registration under the Political Parties Act.
Speaking during the event, Lorionokou congratulated the founders and urged them to uphold the values and principles upon which the party was established, noting that strong leadership and sound internal governance would be critical to the party’s success.
“I encourage UPK’s founding members to foster unity, strengthen internal democracy, and avoid internal disputes that undermine your party’s growth and stability,” the Registrar said.
He emphasized that political parties are key institutions in Kenya’s democratic system and called on the founders to ensure transparency, accountability and adherence to the Constitution, the Political Parties Act and the Political Parties Code of Conduct.
Deputy Director of Registration Locha Ekurudi, whose department coordinated the registration process, reminded the party officials that provisional registration is only the first step towards attaining full registration.
He advised the founders to maintain proper party records and comply with all legal requirements within the prescribed timelines.
“As a provisionally registered party, take note of the 1st of October as the statutory deadline for meeting registration requirements if you intend as a party to participate in the upcoming General Election,” Ekurudi said.
Under the Political Parties Act, a provisionally registered political party is required to recruit members from across the country, establish functional party offices, constitute its governing organs and demonstrate a national character before it can be granted full registration by the Registrar of Political Parties.
The issuance of the certificate brings the number of provisional registration certificates issued by the ORPP to 34, underscoring increased political activity as new political formations position themselves ahead of the 2027 General Election.
In recent months, the Registrar has continued to receive and process applications from new political parties while encouraging them to meet the legal thresholds for full registration within the prescribed timelines.
Over the past year, the ORPP has issued both provisional and full registration certificates to several political parties. Earlier this month, the Registrar granted provisional registration certificates to eight new political parties after they met the initial statutory requirements, while other parties have attained full registration upon satisfying conditions relating to national membership, governance structures and compliance with the Political Parties Act.
According to the ORPP, Kenya currently has 90 fully registered political parties, alongside 34 provisionally registered political parties that are working towards full registration.
The Registrar has consistently urged political parties to strengthen internal democracy, maintain proper records, submit statutory returns on time and comply with the Constitution and the Political Parties Act to avoid sanctions, including deregistration.
The country’s vibrant multiparty democracy was evident during the 2022 General Election, when 65 political parties sponsored candidates for elective positions ranging from the presidency to county assemblies.
The parties contested either independently or under major coalitions, including Kenya Kwanza Alliance and Azimio la Umoja One Kenya Coalition, alongside hundreds of independent candidates.
With preparations for the 2027 General Election gradually gathering momentum, the ORPP has continued to encourage emerging political parties to embrace issue-based politics, strengthen internal governance and build national appeal to enhance democratic competition and political stability in the country.
