Othaya MP Wambugu Wainaina alias Mt Kenya has distributed relief supplies and wheel chairs to scores of local and deserving residents.
The Member of Parliament, accompanied by several local leaders, as well as those from National and County governments gave out more than 15 tonnes of rice to the vulnerable communities in his area.
He disbursed the food which is a relief from the National Government from his office in Othaya town. The food was distributed to about 2,400 families which comprised of mostly the vulnerable and the aged in the constituency.
Speaking while flagging off the donation, the MP noted that many families have been facing famine in the area as they wait for the first harvest after the onset of the long rains.
“Even if the rains have started pounding, the first harvests are yet to be witnessed. It will take another few months for them to harvest. We would like to thank the Presidency for the donation which has greatly benefited the families,” said the MP.
Wainaina who was accompanied by Othaya Deputy County Commissioner Michael Talam said each family from the four wards of Mahiga, Karima, Chinga and Iria-ini wards took home 6Kgs of rice.
A similar amount of beans is expected soon.
The families thanked the area MP and the Kenya Kwanza administration for the donation saying this will boost their families.
The MP disclosed that his office is planning to have a food bank in Othaya for vulnerable people like aged and less disadvantaged people in the society.
At the same time, he distributed wheel chairs for those abled differently in the area where 20 individuals benefitted.
The wheel chairs have been provided by the Metropolitan NGO in partnership with the law maker.
The wheelchairs, in addition to providing mobility, an appropriate wheelchair benefits the physical health and quality of life of the users by helping in reducing common problems such as pressure sores, progression of deformities and improving respiration and digestion.
The MP who is a member of Social Protection Parliamentary Committee said those abled differently must be treated equally with respect so that they live normal lives.
This was the second consignment after others were provided a few months ago after he assumed office.
The MP’s office has also been mapping out those affected in the constituency so that they can benefit from the National Government.
