PACJA Launches 5th Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice to Empower African Youth

The launch of the 5th Cohort of the Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ-V) by the Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA), in partnership with UNECA and the African Union.

The Pan African Climate Justice Alliance (PACJA) has launched its pioneering initiative, the fifth cohort of Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice (NSSCJ-V). This 5th edition  was launched at the town hall, organized by PACJA in partnership with UNECA and AU, bringing together youth from Makerere University and the Alumni of NSSCJ under the theme “Navigating Complex GeoPolitics: Igniting the Power of African Youth to Push Political Leadership in Africa to the Finishing Line.”

Speaking at the launching ceremonies, Dr Mithika, Executive Director, PACJA, highlighted that the initiatives produced skilled youth who are driving climate action in the communities and leading influencing global conversation through climate negotiations and others.

“We are excited to announce the launch of applications for the fifth edition of the Nairobi Summer school on Climate Justice. It’s important to clarify that while it is titled the Nairobi Summer School, it is not limited to Nairobi, it can take place at other locations, such as Makerere. This year’s edition will be held in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, at the University of Addis Ababa, back-to-back with the second edition of the Africa Climate Summit,” said Dr Mithika Mwenda.

Yosef Amha, who represented UNECA, emphasized the role of youth in the future of the continent and stated that building their capacity is important for developing future advocates for the continent.

“You are the one who is dictating our future, the youngest population of Africa. We have to learn how to survive. And you are the ones who are in the driving seat to give us a better future. So whatever solution given to us, let us interrogate it and to the benefits of our economy, ecosystem and society,” reiterated Yosef Amha from UNECA.

Dr Samuel Ogallah from AU said that having youth equipped with knowledge of Climate Change and climate justice gives hope that the continent with have a skilled team for matters related to climate change. He said that this is also the Priority of AU in collaboration with other institutions like PACJA.

“You may not realize how far your ideas can go. We are working with youth negotiators from across the continent, training them as African Union youth negotiators. There is one negotiator present today with whom you can connect,” said Dr Samuel Ogallah.

Since 2021, the initiative has trained over 2000 youth from Africa and beyond. Launched in Kampala, Uganda, on the sidelines of the 11th African Region Forum on Sustainable Development (ARFSD), the 5th Edition of Nairobi Summer School on Climate Justice will be hosted by Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia, from Tuesday, August 18th to 30th, 2025, at Addis Ababa University, Ethiopia.
