Politician
By: Maria Muthoni
Worth Noting:
- It beats any logic I know when I hear a political aspirant say that they have seen their village remain the same sixty years after independence. It makes my years bleed when the said aspirant is an incumbent.
- Now more than ever we are being sold the optimism that voting will end our problems. It will change the system and redirect our future and that of generations to come. I know that my parents will educate me about voting.
- They will sing about how a particular leader is really amazing and has been generously giving them handouts of hundreds of shillings.
“The president will not leave the country to someone he does not trust.”
We all know that whoever controls the media controls the mind. I am certain that the statement has been taken and interpreted in a trillions ways .I am a first time voter .I was very excited to acquire my National identification card. I even registered as a voter because I was told it is my civic duty.
Growing up, I was very active in debate club, I a passionate journalist and government critic. A lot has changed over the years and maybe I do not see things as black and white anymore. Everything went from being excited about watching the political front of the country and having an opinion on everything. Now I would rather go on twitter and laugh about the same reality after it had been satirized. I simply cannot withstand the reality of watching hard news. Fast forward to my opening statement.
Why exactly are we registering as voters if there is someone who knows how the puzzle will end? What then is democracy if the next structure of government is already known and the dice seems to be cast in stone?Β Β In my opinion, it is the reason why most youths did not register as voters despite the campaigns to get them to take part in the civic duty. We hear it in our parents voices when they say they have been there .The voice of despair about the roads that remain dusty. The streets with no lights, the school drop outs because education gets expensive along the way. The worst category are those that dutifully go through the curriculum to the highest level of learning .With barely no jobs and no assurance of any .
It beats any logic I know when I hear a political aspirant say that they have seen their village remain the same sixty years after independence. It makes my years bleed when the said aspirant is an incumbent .Now more than ever we are being sold the optimism that voting will end our problems. It will change the system and redirect our future and that of generations to come. I know that my parents will educate me about voting .They will sing about how a particular leader is really amazing and has been generously giving them handouts of hundreds of shillings. How humanitarian she is for giving girls sanitary towels. I ask; why are our problems your public relation stunt? Where do you get the confidence to take credit for public projects?
I am yet to speak on the sentiments being exchanged .Why are the talks around politics heresy. He said, she said .Tell him or her .The arena is full of bullies. When will Kenya work on policy politics .When will it be about track records and not personal vendetta? The conversations about change are long overdue. Destination happiness has become an addiction. With home, we will head to the ballot, and like every other time, our hearts will be broken. We would like to change the choreography of this political dance. The tango of the voters and aspirants. Although there is always a third party lurking in the shadows. Currently ,there are debts ,traditions of corruption and misuse of public funds From tone to time ,these ghosts cone out of the shadows and walk with the people. Five years later, itβs time to change dance partners and hope that with them gone, so will the intruders of this tango.
At a time when my vote counts, I feel conflicted. How will I decide? Who is the better leader .How do I separate sweetly crafted words almost poetic from sincere desire for leadership. How do I use my vote to bring the change I desire?
I am certain that many youths and first time voters are facing the same challenge. We desire not to be wooed by money and short term pleasures .To hear a new speech. One that is why you are a better candidate and not why another is not. It is time to shift the conversation.
