Raila Odinga, the Azimio leader, has strongly condemned the excessive use of force and harassment by police against peaceful protesters and journalists during the recent ‘Nane Nane’ demonstrations. In a statement, Odinga expressed deep concern over the arbitrary arrests and detentions carried out by law enforcement.
He stressed that the right to peaceful assembly, freedom of expression, and protection of journalists are fundamental pillars of Kenya’s democracy that must be safeguarded. Odinga called for the immediate release of those unjustly detained and a thorough investigation into the misconduct of the officers involved.
The former Prime Minister argued that the police excesses are unacceptable and a direct violation of the rights enshrined in the 2010 Constitution. He warned that the ongoing protests reflect broader discontent over economic issues and urged the government to address the grievances of citizens rather than suppress them with violence.
Odinga’s statement comes amid questions about his political leanings after his close allies were appointed to President Ruto’s cabinet. However, he reiterated that he stands with the Kenyan people in their quest for justice, freedom, and the realization of their rights.
