RCMRD Backs Kenya’s Fight Against Land Degradation with New Mapping Tools

By Aoma Keziah,

In step to tackle land degradation, the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) has handed over new mapping products to Kenya’s Directorate of Resource Surveys and Remote Sensing (DRSRS). The maps, known as Land Degradation Index Maps, paint a clearer picture of where the country’s land faces the greatest pressure.

Land degradation is a growing worry for Kenya, as more areas lose vegetation and soil fertility, communities struggle with reduced harvests and dwindling water resources. With better data, experts believe these threats can be slowed or even reversed.

“This information helps us see exactly where to focus our restoration work. The new maps will help planners match tree-planting and soil conservation work with the places that need it most,” explained id Vincent Imala, a Geo-Information Officer at DRSRS.

Kenya’s government has ramped up tree planting, encouraging citizens to help restore landscapes that have been stripped bare by overuse and climate shifts. With support from RCMRD and the wider Global Monitoring for Environment and Security (GMES) and Africa project, DRSRS aims to connect advanced mapping with real-world action.

Part of this push is a new online tool called JAZAMITI. The platform allows officials and the public to track reforestation work and see progress on land restoration. By combining satellite data with local reports, it gives a clearer sense of what’s working  and what still needs urgent attention.

RCMRD works across Eastern and Southern Africa to help countries use earth observation technology for better planning and environmental management. Backed by the African Union and the European Union, the GMES and Africa project shows how partnerships and technology can help communities adapt to climate pressures.

As Kenya expands its green cover and protects vital resources, leaders hope these tools will not only revive degraded areas but also secure food and water supplies for future generations.
