Regional Centre of Excellence for Biodiversity, Forests, and Seascape Ecosystems Management Launched in Nairobi

A significant milestone in the realm of environmental conservation was marked recently as the Regional Centre for Mapping of Resources for Development (RCMRD) unveiled the Regional Centre of Excellence (RCoE) for Biodiversity, Forests, and Seascape Ecosystems Management in Eastern and Southern Africa. The inauguration ceremony, held at the RCMRD Headquarters on Mwiki Rd in Kasarani, Nairobi, witnessed distinguished guests, policymakers, and environmental enthusiasts gather to witness this momentous occasion.

Graced by the esteemed presence of the Cabinet Secretary for the Ministry of Environment, Climate Change, and Forestry in Kenya, Roselinda Soipan Tuya, the event underscored the collaborative efforts between RCMRD, CIFOR-ICRAF Africa, and regional governments in establishing this pioneering initiative. Also in attendance were Peter Minang, CIFOR-ICRAF Africa Director, and the Director General of RCMRD, among other dignitaries.

The RCoE for Biodiversity, Forests, and Seascape Ecosystems Management stands as the first of its kind in Africa, symbolizing a concerted commitment towards safeguarding the invaluable natural resources of the region. Through the provision of comprehensive regional datasets encompassing the latest trends and threats to forests, seascapes, and biodiversity, the center aims to empower countries in Eastern and Southern Africa to enhance their conservation efforts significantly.

In her address, Ms Tuya emphasized the critical role of the center in combating climate change and achieving sustainable environmental conservation targets. “The establishment of the Regional Centre of Excellence marks a pivotal moment in our collective journey towards environmental sustainability,” remarked Tuya. “By fostering collaboration, innovation, and knowledge exchange, this center will serve as a beacon of hope in our quest to preserve the rich biodiversity and ecosystems of our region.”

Mr. Minang, CIFOR-ICRAF Africa Director, echoed these sentiments, highlighting the center’s potential to catalyze transformative change in conservation practices. “With access to regional datasets and collaborative platforms, governments and stakeholders will be better equipped to address emerging challenges and leverage opportunities for sustainable development,” noted Minang.

The RCoE for Biodiversity, Forests, and Seascape Ecosystems Management will serve as a hub for research, capacity building, and policy advocacy, fostering a dynamic exchange of ideas and expertise. By harnessing cutting-edge technologies and scientific methodologies, the center aims to facilitate evidence-based decision-making and holistic ecosystem management strategies.

Through strategic partnerships with academia, civil society organizations, and international agencies, the center endeavors to mobilize resources and expertise towards shared conservation goals.
