Security officers and Journalists undergoes training on how to protect themselves during the riots

As electioneering period is approaching Kisii county commander Francis Kooli has urged the journalist to be vigilant during the August poll.
Speaking during the rehearsal and checking level of preparedness at Gusii stadium, with security officers and journalist , the county commander said that security of journalist is so paramount.

Mr Kooli said that the main aim of the rehearsal was to check the capacity on how they are prepared and to manage crowd and evacuation of the VIP during the lawless period.
“Situations where public break the law and it’s the role of the security officers to provide security,”
Among the security issues include digital security such as trolling and cyber bullying, digital intrusion by online users, misinformation and misrepresentation that has hence led to the emergence of fake news.
Mr Kooli advised Journalists to always verify the source of the information they get especially on bloggers and citizen journalism as well as any other multimedia platforms while at the same time keeping watch for their security in the field.
“It is important as people look for information especially this elections period, they should ensure they get information from credible and professional persons, in this case accredited journalists, that is why it is important to empower them to give out factual information.
Mr Kooli cited that training is important to empower journalists to get information that would help them be at service to their country by covering elections in an effective and fair manner.
He said that journalist should be convergent to the exit route during the riots.
According to him, most of time when there is chaos, journalist mostly are so vulnerable and undecided to where they can keep safe.
He also advised those Media houses who have not provided safety gears to the journalist to do so but they should follow the correct procedure.
On their part Media council of Kenya has been training journalist on how to cover and fact check information during the electioneering period and were using MCK training manual for election coverage and the guideliness for election coverage launched early this year.
