The Principal Secretary for the State Department for Tourism, John Ololtuaa, has announced plans to roll out a national hotel classification programme to attract more tourists.
The programme, which will be completed in the financial year 2024/2025, will standardise accommodation facilities in the East African Community (EAC) bloc.
The aim is to grow the number of tourists from 2 million to 3 million by the end of this year and, by 2027, to 5 million. The Kenya Tourism Board (KTB) will work with Kenyans in the diaspora to be the champions of inviting the world to visit the country.
The State Department of Tourism is working with other state departments to develop infrastructure and legislation to provide a conducive environment for investments and tourism.
Kwale Governor Fatuma Achani has invested heavily in developing Kwale as a prime tourist destination, including the opening of beach access roads, the construction of washrooms, pedestrian walkways, and beach safety enhancements.
The government has also committed to increasing the air capacity of Jomo Kenyatta International Airport and Moi International Airport, as well as the construction of convention centres in Nairobi and Mombasa.
