Two Day Workshop On Deep Dive On Projects For The Ministry Of Water, Sanitation And Irrigation

The Cabinet Secretary for Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Zachariah Njeru yesterday officially opened a workshop that brought together all the chairpersons and CEOs of both the state departments of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation.
Both PSs Julius Korir, CBS (State Department for Water and Sanitation) and Ephantus Kimotho (State Department for Irrigation) were in attendance.
In his opening speech, the CS stressed the need for all those in management level to always adhere to time management in all their operations.
CS Njeru went further to state that since President Willam Ruto in his wisdom transferred him to the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation, yesterday’s gathering provided the opportunity for familiarization, sensitization and team building in order to know who does what role as stated in the recent Executive Order.
Kenyan citizens are in dire need to services from the ministry and therefore there is no reason to delay them.
Key highlights from the CS remarks revealed that water provision is currently at 71 per cent and anticipated to be at 80 per cent, sanitation services at 33 per cent and expected to be at 60 per cent by 2027.
Since water is a key delivery pillar as enshrined in the Construction of Kenya 2010 under article 43 (b), where every citizen is entitled to clean and safe water of adequate quality and quantity. Water for agriculture is expected to prioritize high impact food production thereby raising value chain food such as maize. In terms of affordable housing, the CS said that without adequate water supply irrigation for food security and healthcare will remain a pipe dream.
The Ministry has elaborate plans to increase irrigation coverage from the current 600,000 acreage to 1.1 million by 2027.
Likewise under the PPP arrangement model, the Ministry intends to construct 100 large dams, over 4000 small dams and pans.
The meeting will provide a platform for the participants to share opportunities and challenges in the implementation of the performance contract targets.
In his closing remarks, the CS urged participants to be good students in learning, and remain open to each other as the two state departments in the Ministry interrelate alot.
