Mombasa residents have opposed the proposed transfer of Amboseli National Park, a national natural resource, to Kajiado County.
They argue that the transfer would lead to discrimination against other communities that rely on national revenue for services.
Joshua Muthoka, a resident of Mombasa, believes that the Maa community should receive a share of the total revenue collected by the national government.
Benard Molo from Nyeri believes that the transfer will prompt other counties with similar natural national resources to prepare proposals for the transfer of resources to their respective county governments.
Abdallah Salim, from Kisauni sub-county, believes that the Kajiado County Government may formulate policies that may favour the Maa community at the expense of other Kenyans.
Mariam Beyawa from Kisauni sub-county, however, supports the move, stating that the Maa community has proven peaceful coexistence with wildlife in the area.
Cleopa Mwawasi from Jomvu sub-county supports the move, stating that the Maa community can coexist peacefully with wildlife in the area.
The Advisory Committee on the Transfer of the Amboseli National Park aims to convert the land from public land held by the national government to community land under Kajiado County’s management.
