It is so concerning that this act of vote buying undermines profoundly the kitchen and of leaders elected to hold public offices to work for the interests of Kenyans. Especially now with the proximity of the August elections politicians are running here and there to give voters cash and some gifts to close eyes of the voters. This cash distributed in rallies and villages lead to injuries to people while struggling to obtain a fifty note. All this is done secretly and odd times because these politicians are aware it’s an illegal influence. This results to voters electing incapable leaders to the offices they will hold and disqualifying strong leaders who can revive the country socially, economically and politically.
The National Crime Research Centre further finds that bribery is the most prevalent form of election offence. Through that vote buying breaks the link between candidate performance and winning elected office. A huge percentage of people are lead in mind that without being given something no vote which is an unfortunate circumstance. Some Kenyans say politicians have given them promises they have never fulfilled so they don’t hope for anything different.
This can be at least curbed through making elected office less financially desirable, something that has been attempted with only a small amount of success, could help. Also laws against voter bribery should be made tough with implementation so that scare can be to these politicians to reduce this negative influence that is outweighing good leadership in the country.
