The founding chairman of Democratic Party of Kenya (DP) Mwai Kibaki was the much touted surprise guest at the party’s National Delegates Conference (NDC) last Sunday.
However, the retired president did not show up at Bomas of Kenya where the NDC took place.
Nonetheless, the conference went on well with a climax being endorsement of National Assembly Speaker Justin Muturi as the party’s Presidential candidate.
A few days to the delegates conference, Muturi used his Social Media channels to announce of the surprise guest who he did not name.
But yesterday, four days after the colourful event Muturi made it public who his guest was.
Through his Facebook account the Speaker disclosed that the retired Head of State who is also the first chairman of DP and who in 1992 and 1997 contested the Presidency on the party’s was his surprise guest.
“There was a confusion on who was the surprise guest during our National Delegate Conference on Sunday. The founding father of Democratic Party of Kenya and former president Mwai Kibaki was the special guest , but unfortunately, he could not make it physically but was well represented,” Muturi said.
He added, “Nevertheless, I was endorsed as the official flag bearer for the party and I am determined to reset this nation and lead us to a prosperity when Kenyans give me the chance in August”.
He did not explain whether the former president who has kept low profile had confirmed attendance and what made him to skip the ceremony.
Yesterday, the Speaker took his campaign to Nyandarua County where he engaged with opinion leaders from Olo-Jororok, Olo-Kalou, Kipipiri and Kinangop Constituencies.
During the series of meetings he held, he took time to remind the leaders that though Mt Kenya region has various political parties, there was need to have one strong party from the mountain.
“The big house we have in Mt Kenya region is Democratic Party. It is the second-oldest party in Kenya after KANU, we only need to revive it,” he said as he drummed support for the Democratic Party of Kenya.
