You will recall that when Jesus prayed in the Garden of Gethsemane, He wrestled with His own human will in those hours of agony. Finally HE SUBMITTED HIMSELF FULLY TO THE FATHER IN HIS FLESH and said, “Abba, Father, all things are possible unto thee; take away this cup from me: nevertheless not what I will, but what thou wilt (MARK14:36).”
What was it that Jesus desired to be taken from Him? What was the cup He didn’t want to drink? Jesus wasn’t just wrestling with the idea of going to the cross, the pain of the scourging, crown of thorns on His head, or nails driven into His hands and feet. Jesus was wrestling with becoming sin. In all of eternity, He had never known sin. In His earthly life, He had lived without sin or guile.
Now the Father was asking Him to take on the sins of the whole world and to become sin. It was such a deplorable concept to Him that He prayed, “Pass this bitter cup from Me!” In all of eternity, the Son of God had never been separated from the Father, not even for the twinkling of an eye. In His walk on earth, He had lived in complete communion with the Father, saying and doing only what the Father led Him to say and do.
