Young people are job seekers but also jobs creators young Kenyans face formidable hardships in finding work. Sadly merit ,skills and talent are not the main factors with so many job seekers competing for scarce opportunities employment often goes to those with connections the “right” tribal affiliations or the ability to pay kitu kidogo.
Women are particularly vulnerable to sexual abuse and harassment improving employment opportunities for young people is a government responsibility, theft cases have been rising due to idleness among the youth finding a job these days can be an uphill struggle for the young.
Majority of the youth are still stuck at low levels of educational achievement educational attainment appears to have a strong influence on individuals labor market activity free school education should be given to the youth so as to increase their market skills developing of strategy, policies and programmes to mitigate the risk and challenges must be given priority by the government so as to reduce unemployment and increase education level among the youth. although convinced by the government in 2006 as one of strategies for addressing youth unemployment a youth enterprise development fund (YEDF)was officially launched in 2007 February it was then transformed into state cooperate in 2007 the funds was established to
- provide loans for on lending to youth owned enterprise
- support youth oriented micro small and medium enterprise
- educate the youth
these strategies should be looked into by government so as to curb unemployment among the youth giving the youths job is the best way to achieve ‘shared prosperity’
The youth are particularly exposed to higher unemployment poor job conditions and a mismatch between their skills and labor market needs.
The lack of employment opportunities can have devastating consequence for youth’s long term employment prospects and to rising inequality and social unrest across the societies
