The Polytechnic’s greening champions collect seedlings from the nursery in preparation for planting
The environment plays a vital role in sustaining human life by providing basic resources such as food, raw materials, medicinal products and a habitat. However, the world is grappling with rapid changes in climate, pollution, resource depletion, global warming, deforestation, drought, flooding and unsustainable agricultural practices.
The greening of TVET is part of the government agenda for climate action to plant 12B trees by 2032. Towards this, The Nyeri National Polytechnic has embarked on activities to address environmental constraints through, the establishment of a tree nursery where seeds are nurtured; the institution has produced over 100,000 seedlings.
The Polytechnic has been engaged in tree planting activities within the institution and in the community around especially at the Tumutumu hills, adopted for restoration and protection. This has been possible through clubs and societies inclined towards environmental conservation; they include: Tourism Club, Green Movement Club, Scouts, Presidential Award and Environmental Club.
The conservation of energy resources is a key concern in environmental conservation. The institution has embarked on the adoption of renewable sources of energy through the installation of solar panels and a projected installation of a biogas plant to reduce pollution, lower energy costs, increase energy security, and promote environmental protection.
Environmental conservation is not just the responsibility of governments and organizations; it requires the active participation of individuals and communities. Through tree planting, the adoption of renewable energy, and community sensitization, we can make a significant difference in the health of our planet. By fostering a collective sense of responsibility and taking practical steps to conserve natural resources, we can create a sustainable future for generations to come. Together, we can restore balance to our ecosystems and work toward a healthier, more resilient world: “Small actions on the environment, big impact”
