- Majority of people living in rural areas lack smartphones that can help them activate their simcards. Those who have smartphones face network challenges. At times they find it difficult to access online platforms that can easily help them update their simcards. They are forced to walk long distances in order to get network.
- Majority of Kenyans depend on these simcards for their daily communication and for making transactions. Some people have been left in dilemma. Communication has been cut off and they have no any option. Business people who rely on making transactions using simcards have a lot of difficulties in running their businesses.
About some three months ago, the government through communication authority issued notice about update and registration of simcards but some people could not manage to do that due to various challenges.
A day ago, simcards that had not been registered and updated were switched off. Many people especially those coming from rural areas have been left stranded after their simcards were switched off.
These people coming from rural areas have had a lot of difficulties in reaching urban centers due to lack of money which can help in facilitating their movements while visiting urban centers to update their simcards.
Some people were not aware about this process of simcard update and registration. People who don’t listen to news are the major victims under this scenario. Awareness should be created to them so that they can be informed about what is going on in the country.

The most affected people are those coming from Arid and semi-arid areas like those living in some parts of North and South Eastern parts of Kenya. They have been receiving support from the government through these simcards. They face challenges in updating their simcards due to short period of time that they were given. Reaching Urban center is a problem to them due to long distances and insecurity in those regions.
The government in conjunction with communication authority should consider these people who were not aware and those coming from rural areas. Deadline should be extended for them so that they can register and update their simcards.
The government should find ways of reaching those living in rural areas and help them update their lines. Awareness can also be created by various means such as organizing road shows and campaign programs to make more people aware.
