Kenya and Austria have bolstered their economic partnership, focusing on youth employment and the digital economy. This milestone was celebrated during Africa Day, an event hosted by the Austrian Federal Economic Chamber (WKO) in Vienna. The gathering highlighted collaborative opportunities to address global labor shortages and promote digital innovation.
Kenya’s Principal Secretary for Diaspora Affairs, Ms. Roseline Kathure Njogu, represented the country at the event. She stressed the transformative potential of Africa’s youth and the significance of nurturing long-term partnerships.
“This year’s theme, ‘Business in Africa is a marathon, not a sprint,’ serves as a reminder that meaningful negotiations and partnerships require time, trust, and mutual understanding,” Ms. Njogu remarked.
A Strategic Partnership
Central to the discussions was the Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) signed between Kenya and Austria in September 2024. The agreement focuses on cooperation in mobility and migration, addressing Austria’s labor shortages in critical sectors such as healthcare, information technology, engineering, and hospitality.
Through this partnership, Kenya aims to align its young professionals with Austria’s labor market needs. “Our government is committed to equipping young people with the skills required to compete globally,” Ms. Njogu stated.
The partnership supports Kenya’s Bottom-Up Economic Transformation Agenda, which prioritizes skill development and international employment opportunities for its citizens. Additionally, Kenya’s Global Labour Market Strategy aims to promote safe and structured migration for skilled workers, ensuring mutual benefits for both economies.
Digital Economy as a Key Driver
The event also highlighted the pivotal role of the digital economy in shaping future work opportunities. Ms. Njogu noted Kenya’s position as a leader in digital innovation within Africa, making it well-suited to support the growth of remote work and global economic integration.
A Platform for Collaboration
WKO President Mr. Harald Mahrer praised the event as a crucial platform for fostering business networking and collaboration. With over 540,000 Austrian businesses under its umbrella, WKO aims to enhance trade linkages through its extensive global network.
The event concluded with an optimistic outlook for the partnership, emphasizing people-to-people connections and economic synergy. As Kenya continues to position itself as a global hub for skilled labor and innovation, the partnership with Austria marks a significant step toward empowering its youth and fostering sustainable development.
