The Kenya Cup Defending Champions Kabras Sugar Rugby Club on Saturday, 18th February 2023 proved their worth by beating KCB Rugby Club 29-23 at KCB Sports Club in a tight match.
Kabras Sugar Rugby Club ended the KCB Unbeaten run in their past nine games, claiming the top position in the Kenya Cup table standings. The two sides were just separated by just one point heading into this clash. However, KCB Rugby Club had an upper hand heading into this game with 10 wins in their 14 previous meetings.
Kabras Sugar Rugby Club were determined to get away with a win after Ntabeni Dukisa scoring a penalty to give Sugarmen a 3-0 lead over KCB Rugby Club.
Kabras extended their lead after Jone Kubu scored a brilliant try which was converted by Ntabeni Dukisa to take the scores to 10-0. Jone Kubu kicked the ball behind KCB defence and collected it to score.
Ntabeni Dukisa drilled in another penalty to take Kabras to a commanding 13-0 lead after KCB Rugby Club forward Oscar Simiyu was sent to the sin bin reducing KCB to 14 men. Dukisa missed another penalty but got another chance and this time he extended the score to 16-0.
KCB Fullback Darwin Mukidza scored their first three points making it 16-3 before Samuel Asati scoring a brilliant try which was converted by Darwin Mukidza to take the scores to 16-10. The game headed to halftime break with a 16-10 lead in favor of the visitors Kabras.
KCB came back stronger in the second half with captain Curtis Lilako scoring a try which was converted by Darwin Mukidza to give KCB a 17-16 lead. Ntabeni Dukisa responded with a penalty but Darwin Mukidza scored two penalities to take the scores to 23-17.
Kabras made some changes bringing in Ephraim Odour and Teddy Akala who greatly impacted the game. From the Scrum Dan Angwech created a good chance for Jone Kubu to score. Ntabeni Dukisa missed the two giving Kabras a 24-23 lead.
Kabras big man Jeanson Musoga scored a try in the last minute of play to seal the victory for the Kakamega based side. Jone Kubu missed the two. points.
Kabras held on to win the game and they will be facing Menengai Oilers in their next Kenya Cup fixture.
