Umulkheir Harun, a nominated Member of Parliament, has raised concerns over the distribution and taxation of sanitary pads in Kenya. In a Parliamentary question addressed to the Cabinet Secretary for Education, Harun sought to know the measures that the government has put in place to ensure that sanitary pads are tax exempt.
Additionally, Harun inquired about the government’s efforts to ensure that school-going girls, particularly those in rural areas and informal settlements, have equal and timely access to sanitary pads. She also sought to understand the Ministry’s plans to address the challenges experienced by young girls as a result of menstrual cycles in sustainable ways.
These questions were directed to the Departmental Committee on Education, and the Cabinet Secretary for Education was expected to provide a comprehensive response to address the concerns raised by the nominated Member of Parliament. This move highlights the ongoing efforts by Kenyan leaders to promote gender equality and ensure that girls have access to basic hygiene and sanitary products necessary for their well-being #13thParliament
