Worth Noting:
- Political Party nominees are required to present duly filled nomination forms including evidence of nomination by their parties that is Kenya Kwanza Coalition or Azimio la Umoja Alliance, a written record of minutes of the meeting of the party at which the candidate was nominated and a sworn affidavit.
- Following a thorough verification process by the Presiding Officers, the candidates were awarded the candidates with Provisional Nomination Certificates.
- The Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition party on the other hand were led by Opiyo Wandayi, Minority Leader in the National Assembly who presented their papers for consideration to EALA.
Political Parties and Independent applicants seeking membership to the East African Legislative Assembly (EALA) yesterday presented their papers to the Parliament of Kenya.
A total of 28 applications were received as the process of nomination entered the second leg.
Under the Kenya Kwanza coalition, 15 nominees submitted their papers in a bid to secure membership to EALA.
National Assembly Majority Leader Kimani Ichungwa and his Senate counterpart Sen. Aaron Cheruiyot presented their nominees before Mr. Jeremiah Nyegenye, Clerk of the Senate and Mr. Samuel Njoroge, Clerk of the National Assembly who served as the Presiding officers and received the nominee submissions.
Former legislators were among the nominees including David Ole Sankok, Hassan Omar, Abdikadir Omar and Cyprian Kubai Iringo.
Others are Mrs. Rebecca Berekeju, Mrs. Zipporah Kering, Mr. Godfrey Maina Mwangi, Mr. Joel Nyambane, Mr. Charles Muteti, Mrs. Falhada Decco Imam, Mrs. Ann Cherono Too, Mr. Jonas Vincent Kuko, Mrs. Lilian Cheptoo Tomitoo, Mr. Yaser Ali and Mr. Salim Mohamed.

The Azimio la Umoja – One Kenya coalition party on the other hand were led by Opiyo Wandayi, Minority Leader in the National Assembly who presented their papers for consideration to EALA.
Under this coalition, 12 candidates were presented by Azimio including Timothy Bosire, Kizito Mugali, Jeremiah Kioni, Fatuma Gedi, Kenedy Musyoka Kalonzo, Mrs. Winnie Odinga, Mr. Suleiman Shabal, Abdulahi Diriye, Mrs. Askur Mor, Mrs. Hellen Mueni and Kanini Kega.
All the Azimio candidates were considered having met the requirements to be issued provisional nomination certificates.
Pursuant to the East African Legislative Assembly Elections Rules, 2017, Independent nominees are required to present a duly filled nomination form, detailed CV, certified copies of certificates, signatures of at least 1000 registered voters from their the respective constituency or 2000 signatures from their respective county.
However, a majority of the independent nominees did not meet the requisite provisions.
Mr. Duncan Mwangi Ndegwa (Independent) made it to the list to be taken to the National assembly for consideration to EALA.
Yesterday the last day for any interested candidates to present their papers of nomination before the presiding officers.
Today and tomorrow Friday, the public will have the opportunity to inspect the nomination papers of the candidates, after which, the Presiding Officers will then transmit their names to the Joint Committee on Election of Members to the EALA.
The Joint Committee co- chaired by Wanjiku Muhia, MP and Sen. Daniel Maanzo, MP will consider the nominations and Report to the Houses of Parliament.
The Presiding Officers will then Gazette the Election date.
The election process will take place on the same date at the same time in the National Assembly and the Senate.
The Elected Members to EALA will be Gazetted on 18th November 2022 and their names will thereafter be transmitted to the Clerk of the East African Legislative Assembly.
