The Senate yesterday opted for a full-house hearing of the impeachment case against Meru Governor Kawira Mwangaza, rejecting a proposal to form a special committee.
The decision sets the stage for a high-stakes public scrutiny of the allegations levelled against the governor.
A motion by the Majority Leader, Senator Aaron Cheruiyot to establish an 11-member committee to probe the impeachment charges was defeated. Senate Speaker Amason Kingi subsequently announced that the matter would proceed to plenary.
โThe motion having been negatived, the route of a special committee is abandoned,โ Kingi declared. โThis now implies that the Senate will investigate the proposed removal from office, by impeachment, of Hon. Kawira Mwangaza in plenary.โ
The Meru County Assembly impeached Mwangaza on Thursday last week, citing gross constitutional violations, misconduct, and abuse of office.
Specific allegations include unauthorized dismissals, disregard for county assembly resolutions, and misleading the public about funds raised after a blogger
