Tana Water Agency Saves Karatina Residents Experiencing Commodity Shortage

A timely intervention by Tana Water Works Development Agency (TWWDA) yesterday saved eminent demonstration by hundreds of residents from Karatina who lives near a sewerage treatment site.
Locals from Kiaigi village who bears the cost hosting the sewer treatment centre for Karatina town had planned a major demonstration over continued spillage of unconssumable Water to Ragati River where they are supposed to draw water.
They have been accusing Mathira Water and Sewerage Company (Mawasco) of failing in their duties of ensuring that sewer from Karatina town undergoes the whole process as stipulated by law.
Although this has beeb going on for years, no leadership has been able to address the menace.
Following the reports on planned demonstration, TWWDA chairman Wanyaga Gathaka with a technical team from his agency visited the site and held consultative meeting with local residents over the issue.
The meeting, also attended by Nyeri County Senator Wahome Wamatinga and officials from Mawasco made several resolutions which cooled down the agitated residents.
Among the issues agreed upon were supply of water to the residents by Mawasco and TWWDA until the spillage issue is arrested.
This will be made possible since, three weeks ago, TWWDA contracted a firm to work on the sewerage system. The contractor who is already on site is also expected to hire locals to do menial jobs.
The meeting also resolved to have a small committee which will be working closely with the contractor and address issues affecting the locals.
Addressing the residents after the meeting, both Gathaka and Wamatinga urged them to be patient as the new government addressed their concerns.
As a stop gap measure, Gathaka urged the locals in particular and Kenyans I general to practice water harvesting to address the commodity shortage.
He said it was unfortunate that millions of litres went down the drain saying with a culture of water harvesting, Kenyans would save themselves from the shortage agony.
The Senator said he would liaise with the TWWDA and other government agencies to address the issue.
