Drought affected livestocks walking to a river
By Peter Mbitiro
Cases of extreme drought in the country has affected majority of Kenyans. Most people in the country are suffering due to the rise in prices of food in the country.
Affording even a single meal in a day is difficult to some people especially those coming from Arid and Semi-Arid parts of the country like the North and south Eastern parts of Kenya. Their livestock and cattle are also affected due to scarcity of water in those regions.
Majority of people in the country especially those living in rural areas depend on agriculture as their means of survival. Due to excess drought that is currently being witnessed in some parts of the country, their crops have been adversely affected. They have no any other means of survival.
Since Agriculture is the backbone of the country’s economy, we have witnessed lower economic development in the country. Most sectors like education has been adversely affected as there is an increase in number of school dropouts, lower class turn out and poor academic performance.
During campaign, Kenyans were promised number of things that were going to be implemented by the current government. Curbing drought and reducing the high cost of living were among them. Its high time that this current government need to act in order to save the lives of majority of Kenyans suffering as a result of drought that is currently experienced in some parts of the country.
The government should provide relief food to the suffering families. Water boreholes and dams should be constructed in areas where there is severe drought to help residents of those specific areas.
The government should also reduce the cost of living. Prices of fuel, cooking oil and maize flour should be reduced.
Farmers should shift to planting drought resistant crops that can survive during persistent drought. Some methods of irrigation should be practiced to enable agriculture move on despite of persistent drought.
