A section of nurses who were contacted under the Universal Health coverage in 2020 during the Covid 19 under a three-year contract have urged the government to absorb them under permanent and pensionable terms.
The nurses from Embu, Meru, Tharaka Nithi and Murang’a counties staged a demonstration in Meru town yesterday.
National chairman Kenya Union of nurses and midwifes Joseph Ngwasi said the nurses were to serve for three years and be absorbed as permanent and pensionable terms but that has not been honoured todate.
“In a budget circle we have seen parliament increasing their budget it is good for the country to know that we only require Sh7.5 billion to make the them permanent and pensionable. Already there is Sh5.5 billion and there is a deficit of Sh2 billion that is required to do conversion of the health workers,” Ngwasi said.
He said the government is not keen to address the issues and they are not going to return to work.
Ngwasi said the nurses were not paid their gratuity after as per the contact and yet new contracts have been issued.
“The Universal Health Coverage do the same work as the other nurses employed permanently yet they receive a quarter compared to their counterparts,” he said.
He urged governors to help with mediating with the national government to address their concerns.
The nursers marched around Meru town and went to Meru governors’ office.
Meru governor Mutuma M’ethinkia was out on official duty but were received by one of the county officials.
