Ambassador Nancy Karigithu is Kenya-AU Backed candidate for IMO Secretary General position

Kenya and indeed Africa at large is proud to present its daughter to the Global scene in the highly competitive position of International Maritime Organisation Secretary General.
The Daughter being presented stands for enthusiasm, passion, hardwork, charisma, and nothing stands in her way in her quest for this prestigious position.
She is Ambassador Nancy Karigithu, who is currently Kenya-AU Backed candidate for the IMO Secretary General position.
Ambassador Karigithu took a moment to share with us her agenda which is anchored on five key points which we are enumerating here:
“My candidature is anchored on two main points:
- Restoration of multilateralism and rule based system within the IMO meetings which will be achieved by making sure that the decisions made by the organisation are based on the principles of international law and norms and take into account the interests and perspectives of all member states in line with the United Nations Convention on the Law of the Sea and the new BBNJ treaty
- Streamline the organisation’s program of activities with the United Nations Secretariat in New York in order to create synergy and deeper collaboration especially on areas of ocean governance, maritime security, and the attainment of United Nations Sustainable development Goals as well as to strengthen collaboration with other UN agencies, industry associations, NGO’s and other stakeholders in order to achieve common objectives in the maritime sector.
Her other key agenda includes
“Restoration of multilateralism within the IMO meetings.
Gender mainstreaming in the maritime industry in line with UN Sustainable Development Goal Number 5.
Continued modernization of the IMO Secretariat and streamlining the Organization’s activities with the UN Secretariat in New York on areas of ocean governance and security.
Ensuring increased participation and involvement of the Global South, particularly developing countries and especially the SIDs and LDCs in IMO decision making meetings and activities.
Spearhead the just and equitable transition of the decarbonization of the maritime industry through IMO Green House Gas reduction initiatives to realize global equity, social justice, technological inclusivity and sustainability.”
