United Democratic Alliance (UDA) nominations held on Thursday witnessed numerous irregularities with those who lost vowing to seek alternative ways of appearing on the ballot papers, come August 9.
Aspirants from various places reported massive incidents of malpractices which included double voting, use of outdated IEBC register, biased polling officials and uncoordinated plans ahead of the nominations.
In Nyeri, Tetu Constituency Member of Parliament Gichuhi Mwangi termed the exercise a sham saying he would never accept the results.
In the constituency, the MP lost to businessman Geofrey Wandeto.
In the neighbouring Nyeri Town constituency, businessman Duncan Maina Mathenge was declared the winner amidst protest from some of his competitors.
Former mayor of the defunct Nyeri Municipality Wanyaga Gathaka and lawyer Stanley Wabandi said the exercise was full of irregularities and cited incidents that included UDA hiring Mathenge supporters to be polling officials.
They claimed that the biased polling officials allowed people who were not in the respective polling stations to cast votes.
During a press conference they held at Senior Chief Wambugu Palace, the two threatened to move to court if the exercise was not repeated.
In the alternative, the two said they would consider supporting another person for the seat.
The two were accompanied by three voters from the constituency who narrated incidents of irregularities.
In one incident, they disclosed that a voter was allowed to vote despite not being a voter in that polling station. The voter said she witnessed several people voting without being checked on the IEBC register.
The press was also shown a video and photos showing voters having more than one ballot paper for a particular position.
In Kieni constituency, businessman Njoroge Wainaina was declared the winner after beating two other contenders.
He will now face it with area MP Kanini Kega.
There were no nomination in the other three constituencies of Mathira, Mukurwe-ini and Othaya.
In Mathira, area MP Rigathi Gachagua will fly the UDA ticket as no one has ever shown interest in the seat on the party’s ticket. He will face among others Jubilee’s Wambura Maranga, Narc Kenya’s Waruru Gikandi and Usawa Kwa Wote’s Karweru Kiragu.
However, in Mukurwe-ini, the party’s flag bearer John Kaguchia secured the ticket after two aspirants bloated out.
Now, Kaguchia will battle it with Kariuki Wa Muchemi of Jubilee party. Also in the race is the incumbent Anthony Kiai who is defending the seat on The Service Party (TSP).
The same case was witnessed in Othaya constituency where businessman Wambugu Wainaina got the ticket after a contender opted out.
Wainaina will now face off with incumbent Gichuki Mugambi who is defending his seat in Jubilee ticket.
