DRC Crisis

Worth Noting:
- The latest media reports indicate that the statement echoing Dr Ruto’s interventions was issued by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.
- During EAC/SADC summit, the Kenyan head of state further emphasized on urgent need for a collective regional response to de-escalate tensions and restore stability.
- The summit was preceded by an article I had written some days earlier
- I stated that (DRC) crisis have intensified in recent past. The war pits Congolese Defence Forces against M23 rebels.
- Then, I questioned the motive of the authors of one of the headline stories published by one of the local mainstream media house.
Recently, President William Ruto alongside his Zimbabwe counterpart Emmerson Mnangangwa today co-chaired joint East Africa Community (EAC) and Southern African Development Community (SADC) summit in Dar es Salaam, Tanzania.
The deliberations at the summit which brought together the heads of state and government from the two regional blocs focussed on crafting a way forward for resolving the ongoing conflict in Democratic Republic of Congo (DRC).
In his speech, President Ruto, who is the chairman of EAC, called for an immediate ceasefire in Eastern DRC.
He also ruled out military intervention and instead rooted for diplomatic resolution. “I urge all parties to prioritize diplomacy over military action”.
US President Donald Trump’s administration have now thrown its weight behind him.
The latest media reports indicate that the statement echoing Dr Ruto’s interventions was issued by US Secretary of State Marco Rubio.

The summit was preceded by an article I had written some days earlier
I stated that (DRC) crisis have intensified in recent past. The war pits Congolese Defence Forces against M23 rebels.
Then, I questioned the motive of the authors of one of the headline stories published by one of the local mainstream media house.
This story alleged that President Felix Tshikekedi had snubbed President Ruto’s invitation to attend mediation talks at State House Nairobi because he doubted Dr Ruto’s commitment to resolve the Congolese crisis.
This newspaper further alleged that Kenya is on spotlight over what is seen as supporting President Paul Kagame of Rwanda.
Kagame is being accused of supporting M23 rebels though he has repeatedly denied these claims.
As a writer and social commentator, I have been following with keen interest the Congolese crisis. I want to say without fear of contradictions that Kenya is not supporting
President Kagame.
President Ruto has since adopted a neutral position on this crisis
Kenya’s wish and ultimate goal is to ensure a speedy resolution of this conflict and a restoration of peace and stability in this country.
For starters, DRC crisis have existed for over three decades.
Contrary to the impressions created by his critics, President Ruto is a negotiator and an arbitrator of the highest calibre.
He has so far used these skills to reach out to all warring factions.
Before the publication of the story, he had already held conversations with DRC President Tshikesedi and his Rwanda counterpart Paul Kagame.
He had convinced the duo to attend the Nairobi meeting.
One would have expected the authors of the story to find out from the highly credible and official sources within the presidency of DRC on why Tshikesedi failed to attend the Nairobi meeting.
The paper failed to do so and only quoted comments by a little- known Tshisekedi’s Spokesperson.
It is worth noting that Dr Ruto’s commitment to peace and security in Kenya, EAC region, Africa and the world as a whole is not in doubt.
This explains why the EAC heads of state and government recently elected him as chairman of regional bloc.
Therefore, Dr Ruto would not sit and watch when the peoples of neighboring countries are suffering because of political crisis ignited by their own leaders.
The authors opted to put words into DRC leader’s mouth. Who told you Tshikekedi snubbed President Ruto because he doubted his commitment to steer DRC out of the current crisis?
It is worth noting DRC is a member of EAC community. The heads of state and government of this regional bloc had a month ago elected President Ruto to steer EAC. Would you expect them to elect a failure?
These leaders settled on Dr Ruto because he had also proved his worthiness in terms of addressing the challenges facing the Kenyan people.
When President William Ruto was sworn-in, he immediately appointed the outgoing President Uhuru Kenyatta to spearhead the talks on behalf of Kenya aimed at resolving the Congolese conflict.
Dr Ruto has since continued to demonstrate that he is fully committed to resolving this recurring conflict.
