Rigathi Gachagua, Sammy Kamau and Cleophas Malala
Democracy for Citizens Party (DCP) leader Rigathi Gachagua on Friday visited Ol Kalou Constituency, a day after the party clinched its first parliamentary seat through Sammy Kamau Waweru in the hotly contested by-election.
Gachagua toured parts of the constituency to thank residents for what he described as a courageous decision to elect Waweru, saying the outcome would remain a significant chapter in Kenya’s political history.
The former Deputy President was received by jubilant supporters who celebrated the victory, with Gachagua praising voters for standing firm and exercising their democratic right.
The visit came after Gachagua issued a statement congratulating Waweru and thanking the people of Ol Kalou for their resilience during the electoral contest.
In the statement, the DCP leader said Ol Kalou had restored Waweru’s “true heroism” and praised him for his courage and determination.
“Ol Kalou Town proudly made Sammy Kamau Waweru regain true heroism. We thank you for your courage and resilience. History will be kind to you in the liberation cause,” Gachagua said.
He also praised residents of WaKiongo in Mirangine Ward, claiming they rejected attempts to influence their decision and upheld the dignity of their vote.
“Nothing worked! Not violence, not guns or teargas. Money failed completely,” Gachagua said, while accusing unnamed actors of trying to sway voters through various means.
He further thanked Ol Kalou residents for electing Waweru, whom he said represented the people’s choice, and described the victory as a demonstration of the power of voters.
During his tour, Gachagua reiterated his call for Kenyans to protect the sanctity of their votes, saying democratic choices must be respected.
The Ol Kalou by-election marked a major political milestone for DCP, giving the party its first elected Member of Parliament and strengthening its presence in the political arena.
