Government has confirmed that this year’s Mashujaa Day celebrations will go on as planned, even as the country continues to mourn the death of former Prime Minister Raila Amollo Odinga.

In a statement,  Government Spokesperson Dr. Isaac Mwaura said that the late Odinga’s contribution to Kenya’s political and democratic journey will forever be remembered, describing him as “a great hero and statesman whose indomitable spirit shaped the nation’s history.”

Odinga, who passed away on Wednesday October 15th, will be laid to rest on Sunday 19 at  his rural home in Bondo, Siaya County. “May his soul rest in eternal peace,” Mwaura said.

While acknowledging the grief that has engulfed the country, the government has affirmed that Mashujaa Day, a national holiday anchored in the Constitution and celebrated every October 20, will proceed as scheduled at Ithookwe Stadium in Kitui County

“The day remains an important moment for the country to reflect on the sacrifices made by men and women who have played a role in building the nation. This celebration stands as a cornerstone of our collective identity,” he said.

However, he added that some related activities such as Energy Week and the Media Breakfast have been postponed to allow Kenyans time to mourn and reflect, following the directive of President William Ruto.

The Spokesperson urged citizens to attend the celebrations in large numbers and to honor both the late Raila Odinga and other national heroes who paved the way for Kenya’s progress.

“Let us come together as one people to celebrate the enduring legacy of Raila Odinga and all our mashujaa. On this day, we not only mourn but rise together in the spirit of harambee, recommitting ourselves to the dream of a united and stronger Kenya.”  Mwaura appealed.
