The Kenya Kwanza government will ensure that citizens get adequate water for both domestic and farming.
Water, Sanitation and Irrigation Cabinet Secretary Zachariah Njeru said the government will ensure that Kenyans have enough commodities.
Speaking in Nyeri County yesterday, the CS said the government was partnering with various development partners to make the pledges realized.
He was in Nyeri to preside over the groundbreaking ceremony of the construction of a biogas dome at Gatuanyaga Secondary School in Kieni constituency.
The dome is one of the three units that Africa Development Bank and the Kenya government has recently sponored in the mountain region.
The units will be established in learning institutions in Nyeri, Kirinyaga and Embu counties.
The KSh34 million projects is being implemented under the Kenya Towns Sustainable Water Supply and Sanitation program.
Njeru emphasized that water is a human right and not a privilege. He commended the Tana Water Works Development Agency for embracing technology in the implementation of water and sanitation interventions.
The CS further recognized the efforts of students and staff of Gatuanyaga Secondary School towards achieving environmental sustainability through their โAdopt a Treeโ Initiative.
The agency Chief Executive Officer Eng. Phillip Gichuki emphasized that the firm’s commitment to address climate change was the key driving factor in this initiative.
He outlined the project’s significance, while agency chairman Wanyaga Gathaka expressed gratitude to the Ministry for consistently supporting the Agency.
The CS later inspected the Mathira Community Water Project, which included the inspection of a 225 metric tonnes water storage tank at Ihwagi Primary School as well as a beneficiary of the project.
The CS acknowledged the project’s community-driven origins: two intakes and eight water storage tanks. He emphasized the importance of local ownership of projects for sustainability and commended the collaborative efforts between the community and the Agency. He added that community involvement signifies goodwill and responsible management.
Beyond sanitation initiatives, the CS advocated for sewer projects as a holistic solution to the water crisis.
The event, attended by local leaders led by Kieni MP Njoroge Wainaina and the entire TWWDA board, showcased the Agency’s dedication to fostering sustainable water and sanitation solutions. The CS was accompanied by among others Water Secretary Eng. Samuel Alima.
