Kenya Water And Sanitation International Conference And Exhibition Taking Place In Mombasa

- Speaking while addressing the conference, the Deputy President said that the government is going to adopt innovative financing under the Public Private Partnership (PPP) model with a view of bridging the water and sanitation coverage gap.
- The DP, directed the policy actors ensure that water is put at the centre of any action plans to adapt and mitigate climate change saying that ineffective regulations can disincentive utilities to improve service delivery and unclear policies can make it difficult for institutions to understand their roles.

An international conference on water and sanitation is taking place in the coastal town of Mombasa.
The Kenya Water and Sanitation international conference and Exhibition which kicked off on Monday is expected to end on Friday.
It is an initiative of the Ministry of Water, Sanitation and Irrigation in partnership with Water and Sanitation Services Providers Association (WASPA), County Government of Mombasa and the Council of Governors.
The conference which is taking place at The Sarova White Sands Hotel has a theme of “Harnessing Technology & Innovation to accelerate access to safely managed water and sanitation for all” and was officially opened Deputy President Rigathi Gachagua on Monday on behalf of H.E President William Samoei Ruto.
The main goal of the conference is to bring together key stakeholders to exchange practical knowledge, insights and lessons on climate smart change and innovations in the Water and Sanitation sector to accelerate achievement of SDG6.
The conference is focusing on technology and innovations for the promotion of good governance in water and sanitation and leveraging innovative financing and market opportunities to accelerate availability and access of portable water and safe sanitation for all
The specific objectives of the conference are; Technology & Innovation for the promotion of good governance in water and sanitation, Leveraging Innovative financing and Market opportunities to accelerate availability and access of potable water and safe sanitation for all, Leveraging Technology and Innovation, Big Data and Information for accelerated access to water and sanitation for all, Capacity Development and Research to invest in and develop human digital capital in the water and sanitation sector, and Climate Change, Health & Environment: Technology & Innovation for Monitoring and Disaster Risk Reduction in Water and Sanitation sector,

Cabinet Secretary Alice Wahome affirmed government’s commitment towards supporting water management and called upon the County governments to collaborate with the Water Works Development Agencies in their areas to work towards transmission of the water and enable absorption to by reticulation.
Further the CS said that the Ministry will remain focused to realize the ultimate goal by the Presidency to implement programs, projects, policies, legal and institutional transformations that will ensure increased provision of water and sanitation services for all, food and nutrition security and realization of the Bottom-up Economic Transformation Agenda.
She launched the 2021/22 impact report which saw stakeholders awarded certificates and trophies for performance in various parameters.
Principal Secretary for Water and Sanitation Dr Kipronoh Ronoh on his part pointed out the need for a water master plan and the funding plan saying they were critical documents that will inform the development of the White Paper which is key in managing the critical resource
He called upon for an integrated approach towards water management that will involve all the relevant sectors in terms of deployment of infrastructure and coordinated programs
Speaking during a sector caucus session Principal Secretary for Irrigation Ephantus Kimotho said they had introduced smart meters at intake to measure volumes abstracted by each irrigation scheme and piloting soil moisture sensors to inform irrigation scheduling.
Some of the leaders who also attended the conference included Cabinet Secretary Chelugui and Mining Blue Economy, and Maritime Affairs Salim Mvuria as well as Governors Joshua Irungu (Laikipia), Andrew Mwadime (Taita Taveta) and Abdulswamad Sharif Nassir (Mombasa)
