Deputy President Kithure Kindiki has defended government donations and fundraisers to the church.
Kindiki said they will continue helping churches that are willing. “We are Christian’s first before we become leaders,” he said.
“There has been a debate about church donations some clergy are against announcing the amount we have donated, others want donations given and announced for accountability and others completely do not even want those donations we will respect everybody’s decisions because when we come to church we are under clerics in churches where we are not wanted we will keep off,” Kindiki said.
He said there is no competition between the government and the church as they complement each other.
“Our objectives in the society are almost similar. We have many schools, hospitals and other institutions built by the church, so we appeal to especially the Catholic church that we are partners,” Kindiki said.
He spoke at St Theresa Riiji Catholic church in Central Imenti Constituency, Meru county yesterday after attending a church Service.
Kindiki said the Kenya Kwanza government has managed to raise coffee prices from Sh50-Sh60 per kg to between Sh130-Sh140 per kg in two years.
On tea, he said they found it at Sh.44 per kg to sh.64 per kg
“We have been able to bring the prices of coffee and tea because of government fertilizer subsidy that brought fertilizer from Sh7000 to Sh2500 per 50 kg sack,” he said.
The DP noted that President William Ruto’s administration found US dollar at Sh165 which has now gone down to Sh129 meaning the economy is stablising and the prices of food commodity has gone down.
He said they have secured funding to construct Nithi Bridge that has killed and injured many people due to accidents with the construction expected to commence before the end of the year.
On electricity, he said 20,000 me homes will be connected with electricity in Meru county and 13 new markets will be constructed.
Later, the DP attended another church service and fundraising at Mikumbune Methodist church in South Imenti constituency.
He was accompanied by among others Water Cabinet Secretary Eric Mugaa, Meru Governor Isaac Mutuma among others.
