President Uhuru Kenyatta yesterday hosted more than 10,000 leaders of various calibres from Central Kenya who he urged to maintain unity of purpose as the region needs to speak with one voice on national matters including this year’s General Elections.
The meeting held at Sagana State Lodge in Mathira constituency, Nyeri County saw the President through Presidential Delivery Unit (PDU) head Andrew Wakahiu take the delegates through the numerous achievements the government had achieved.
Wakahiu clearly emulated the projects detailing President Kenyatta’s achievements as compared to former administrations.
It is only the President, Wakahiu and Health Cabinet Secretary Mutahi Kagwe who addressed the gathering. Kagwe took less than five minutes as his role was to invite the President. When he rose to speak, the Head of State briefly explained why he had invited the delegates before telling them there was something he wanted highlighted to them by Wakahiu.

He had started his speech in Kiswahili but the delegates urged him to switch to the Kikuyu language upon which he asked those from Meru and Embu communities whether they were comfortable with the proposal which they approved.
Using projected images, Wakahiu, taking the cue from the President clearly explained the gains the region could boost of since the fourth President took over the highest political office in the country.
From infrastructure, farming to health, Wakahiu took about 30 minutes to take the delegates through the achievements and after he finished he was applauded by the President who continued with his address.
Those present included region’s elected leadership and representatives of various special interest groups.
President Kenyatta said peace was a prerequisite for development.
“When you elected me, I promised to work hard to unite Kenyans and ensure they live together in peace. This is because there can be no development without peace,” he said.
At the same time, the President cautioned Kenyans not to be hoodwinked into electing self-seeking politicians currently roaming the country abusing others and peddling falsehoods.
President Kenyatta, who outlined development projects his administration had implemented in Central Kenya, said the country had made tremendous progress during his tenure.
He said infrastructure, energy, water, agriculture and health are some of the sectors that experienced unprecedented expansion under his stewardship.
“What I say about development in the Mount Kenya region is the same thing I say in Mombasa, Nyanza and anywhere else in the country because that is the truth and I do not fear saying it,” the President said.

The President advised the youth to be mindful of the progress the country had made over the years and to avoid being drawn into divisive political sloganeering that threatens the country’s cohesion.
Apart from Kagwe and Wakahiu, other senior government officials in the meeting included Cabinet Secretaries Peter Munya (Agriculture), James Macharia (Infrastructure) and Prof Margaret Kobia (public Service).
Apart from the development projects and hitting out on some leaders, the President heaped praises on Munya saying in the short time he has headed his docket, tremendous changes, beneficial to Kenyans whose main stay had been witnessed.
He appeared to suggest that Munya was destined for bigger things as he sought the delegates’ approval on whether he should continue serving Kenyans, with some pundits interpreting that to mean he could be Raila Odinga’s Deputy President.
