Correctional Services Principal Secretary Dr Salome Beacco has appealed to residents of Kiambu County including the disabled to turn out and register for the newly announced government jobs in the informal sector.
Beacco noted with concern that the county is lagging behind other regions in the registration exercise for the ‘Climate Works’ initiative also known as Kazi Mtaani which has so far attracted over 300,000 youths countrywide.
The PS spoke at Kiamwangi center in Gatundu South when she presented wheelchairs, crutches and other aids to disabled persons from the area. She also brought food donations to the residents.
“We are pleading with our people to seize the opportunity availed by the government and enroll for the jobs so that they can make a decent living and improve their living standards. There are numerous opportunities for everyone including those abled differently,” the PS said.
Maintaining that government jobs are available for all Kenyans, including the physically challenged, Dr Beacco pleaded with locals to embrace the initiative and go for jobs in the affordable housing scheme as well.
Regarding the yearly assessment of persons with disability, the PS said that going forward there will be no need to repeat the exercise once they have been identified.
“It’s an exercise done to weed out unscrupulous individuals who are after opportunities reserved for the handicapped but there’s a plan to ensure that once the exercise is done, it won’t be carried out again on those verified,” she said.
She also announced that scores of people with disability from the area have been registered with the Social Health Authority (SHA) in order to access treatment easily.
“It’s very important to be insured by the National Healthcare scheme for ease of access to healthcare services in all medical facilities. We are still rallying our people to register for their own benefit,” Dr Beacco said.
Kiamwangi ward MCA Kung’u Smart appealed to parents across the country not to hide their physically and mentally handicapped children.
The ward rep said that the government as well as Non Governmental Organizations (NGOs) are up to the task and are ready to help the disabled with mobility devices as well as counseling.
Kung’u said that parents must overcome the stigma of having disabled kids for their sake noting that there are thousands of handicapped children who are suffering silently in their homes.
“I appeal to parents not to lock up their handicapped children because it’s a disservice to them. There’s help out here with so many NGOs and support groups ready to assist both the parents and the children,” the MCA said.
Representatives of the PWDs welcomed the government’s support to members and reiterated that the assessment should be done away with.
