Senator Edwin Sifuna

Nairobi City County Senator Edwin Sifuna yesterday demanded a statement from the Senate Standing Committee on Energy regarding the continued lack of access to electricity in several neighbourhoods across capital city.
Citing prolonged power disconnections, nonexistent infrastructure and apparent neglect by Kenya Power, the Senator expressed concern over worsening insecurity, stifled economic activity and deepening inequality in the affected areas.
He singled out Hospital Ward in Mathare Constituency which has gone without electricity for over four years and Majengo Gorofani in Kamukunji Constituency where residents have lived in darkness for two and a half years, yet continue to receive bills from Kenya Power.
In Korogocho Ward, Ruaraka Constituency, the entire villages of Ngomongo, Ngunyunu, Gitathuru, Highridge, Grogon A, Grogon B, Korogocho A, Korogocho B and Nyayo remain unconnected to the grid. Similar conditions persist in Rei Gateway, Simba Cool Zone and Bantu Zone in Kwa Reuben Ward of Embakasi South which according to Sen. Sifuna have never been connected to power.
Sifuna is seeking the Committee’s intervention to establish the immediate and long-term plans by Kenya Power to restore electricity to Hospital Ward in Mathare, the status and timeline for reconnecting Majengo Gorofani in Kamukunji and an explanation for continued billing, as well as any concrete programmes to connect the unserved villages in Korogocho and Kwa Reuben Wards, including budgetary provisions and implementation schedules.
He emphasized that Nairobi, as the capital city, cannot afford to have residents living in the dark while national infrastructure continues to expand elsewhere.
