The County Government of Nakuru is setting up an ultra-modern market in Karai area, Naivasha, along Nakuru-Nairobi highway.
The new market, set to cost about Sh80 million will house among other stakeholders, fishmongers who trade along the highway.
Area Governor Lee Kinyanjui said the construction had been necessitated by concerns raised over the quality of fish sold by hawkers in the area.
Young people have been selling fish from Lake Naivasha on the highway to earn a living but the handling and quality has over the time been raised buyers, the county government as well as Public Health officials.
The market which is set to be completed by December this year will solve the hygiene issue as it will have refrigeration facilities, a fish processing area as well as restaurants.
Making the disclosure, Kinyanjui said, ” in the meantime, we will deploy temporary measures to help the youth sell quality fish to motorists. The measures include providing them with mobile refrigerators to keep the fish instead of displaying all of them in the hot sun and dusty environment”.
