In a spirited drive to cultivate sporting talent from a young age, Tharaka Nithi County Government has embarked on an ambitious initiative to distribute sports equipment and invest in modern sports infrastructure across its constituencies.

The exercise, spearheaded by the Department of Youth and Sports under the leadership of County Executive Committee Member (CECM) Moreen Nyambura, kicked off on Monday in Tharaka constituency with the issuance of balls to primary schools, continued on Tuesday in Maara, and wrapped up on Wednesday in Chuka/Igambang’ombe.

Ms Nyambura noted that the initiative specifically targets children under the age of 17, primarily in primary and junior secondary schools, in a bid to tap and nurture raw talent at an early stage.

“Our main focus is on the youth, especially those still in school. These balls are not just playthings—they are instruments of empowerment. We believe that by providing the right tools, we can inspire the next generation of sport professionals,” said Ms Nyambura.

She added that the county government, under Governor Muthomi Njuki, has laid out a long-term vision for sports development, which includes the construction of modern stadiums as legacy projects.

Facilities such as Kairuni Stadium in Tharaka, Kajiunduthi in Maara, Kibugua in Chuka/Igambang’ombe, and Nyangumi in Tharaka are already in the pipeline or under construction.

“Talent pays. That is why even the national government has integrated sports into the new school curriculum. We are simply building on that foundation by ensuring our children have access to the best facilities and opportunities,” she added.

The county’s commitment to inclusive development was also evident in its outreach to institutions for children with special needs. Tharaka Nithi Chief Officer for Children and Gender, Ms Karimi Rwigi, who also oversees the sports docket, emphasized the importance of supporting children living with disabilities.

“Our children with special needs actively engage in sports such as sitting volleyball. The donation of balls to Kibumbu Children’s Home and Ikuu Special School is a clear demonstration that no child should be left behind,” said Ms Rwigi.

The distribution exercise drew support from key stakeholders in the education and sports sectors. Daniel Ibichu, Chairperson of the Kenya Football Federation (KFF) Tharaka Nithi Chapter, reaffirmed the Federation’s partnership with the county government in developing talent at the grassroots level.

“Real talent is discovered and nurtured in primary school. We are committed to working hand-in-hand with the county to ensure these young stars get the exposure and training they deserve,” Mr. Ibichu said, while urging football clubs across the county to maintain unity and focus on developing the sport to higher standards.

Representatives from the Members of Parliament offices, Kenya Primary and Junior Secondary Schools Association and Kenya Secondary Schools Sports Association were also present during the distribution exercise, underlining the cross-sectoral approach taken by the county.

Ms Isabela Mukiri, Deputy Headteacher of Ikuu Special School, expressed her gratitude to the county government and partners for their continued support.

“Our learners are actively involved in ball games and athletics. We have two students who have made it to the national level competitions. These balls will go a long way in preparing them for even greater success,” she said.

With consistent investment in infrastructure and equipment, Tharaka Nithi County is not just building stadiums—it is building dreams. As the momentum grows, so does the hope that these young talents will one day shine on national and international stages, proudly flying the county’s flag.
