The Kikuyu Community Patron Dr Thuo Mathenge alias Wangùkù has condemned utterances made by the former leader of the outlawed Mungiki sect.
Dr Mathenge said the declaration made on Tuesday last week by Maina Njenga at Kabiru-ini grounds near Nyeri town were only meant to divide the most populous community.
He urged Njenga, who is his longtime friend, not to fall in the trap of selfish leaders from other communities and be key figure in dividing Kikuyus.
Dr Mathenge who spoke yesterday when he was hosted at the Inooro TV morning show by Kamau Kang’ethe told leaders from the mountain region to stop being emotional when addressing some issues but to instead use their wisdom, for their own good and the residents.
He said he declined to attend the Kabiru-ini meeting since he suspected that its convention was not meant for the good of the community that he heads as it’s Patron.
He said he could not be party to a scheme, hatched to undermine other leaders like Rigathi Gachagua as Njenga announced during the meeting.
He called on some leaders to accept reality and be ready to reform, saying actions associated with some tribal grouping were regrettable and Kenyans were not ready to take such a route again.
“I am a patron of all Kikuyu Community members. I am the patron of those perceived to be good or bad members of this community. My aim is to unite all Kikuyus so that we can see and speak in one voice,” Dr Mathenge said.
He, at the same time, defended action by some members of the community to join President William Ruto’s government despite its waning popularity in the region, saying it was good for the community.
He explained that by accepting the position of chairmanship for Kenya Agricultural and Livestock Research Organization (KALRO), he was not turning out to be a traitor as some people wanted the Kenyans to believe, but it was one way of ensuring that the community is not left behind in decision making organs.
Likewise, he said, he fully supported the entrance of Mutahi Kagwe, Lee Kinyanjui, and William Kabogo in the cabinet saying they will be representing the interests of the region and their declining of such appointments would only make the community be isolated more from other Kenyans.
He said the former Deputy President should be allowed to exercise their democratic rights of association and movement saying scheming to bring chaos in his meetings will only erode gains made when Kenya scrapped Section 2A of the Constitution in the 1990s and further voted in new constitution in 2010.
He commended former president Uhuru Kenyatta for his wisdom of accepting to meet president Ruto and allowing some of his allies to join the current regime.
Saying the region had learnt a political lesson, he urged the area leaders and residents to join, The New Democrats (TND) political party which he is the national chairman and make it their bargaining ship in the future political arraignment.
