The Kerio Valley Development Authority (KVDA) has launched a programme to plant six million trees in Samburu County to combat climate change. The initiative aligns with the national government’s goal of planting 15 billion tree seedlings by 2032. KVDA will also establish a tree nursery with one million seedlings in Maralal town to increase seedling supply to schools, communities, and organised groups. The KVDA has also funded the construction of six boreholes and four water pans in Samburu west and Samburu north at a cost of Sh120 million. The water infrastructure will not only mitigate drought but also promote diversity in crop production and reduce malnutrition. The KVDA is committed to promoting conservation and drought mitigation measures in ASAL regions.

Parents have been urged to be on the lookout on activities being carried out by their children during the long Christmas holiday. The administrator of St Teresa Kanyange Academy in Othaya, Nyeri County, Mr Githinji Wairagu noted that without keeping an eye on the learners, they were prone to being attracted to indiscipline activities. Speaking after a graduation ceremony for his school’s PP2 pupils, Mr Wairagu urged parents to at all times know what their children were doing saying doing to the contrary will only result in jeopardising their learning when studies resume in January next year. He thanked parents whose children study and have studied at the Othaya town based school for their support, saying thousands of those who have passed through there have excelled in many industrious careers. He at the time wished those sitting for Grade 6 and the last KCPE examinations at the school all the very best.

The National Gikuyu Cultural Association, Kìama-kìa-Ma in Nyeri, is seeking government intervention to prevent cultural groups from infiltrating and corrupting the initiation ceremony for young boys after sitting for Kenya Certificate of Primary Education candidates exams. The elders have requested security agents to stay vigilant and investigate the activities of these illegal groups, which are promoting outlawed cultural practices such as Female Genital Mutilation. The intrusion has already occurred in Kajiado County and Mai-Mahiu in Nakuru County, and plans are to encroach into Nyeri via the southern part of the county. The cultural elders have released a list of initiation centres in eight Sub-counties where they will conduct the rite of passage. They have warned parents whose children will undergo the initiation ceremony in November to be wary of the groups that will corrupt the morals of the initiates by encouraging them to sway from Kikuyu cultural values. Parents are advised to verify the authenticity of the elders by visiting the Kiama Kia Ma offices in Tetu and the eight centres.
